Paranormal Entity (2009)
Plot: Following Thomas Finley’s apparent slaying of his younger sister and a paranormal investigator, this home video footage surfaced, clearly revealing his family’s frighteningly real struggles with a powerful spiritual entity that haunted their house. Throughout this terrifying horror film, the Finleys become overwhelmed by the demonic force that refuses to leave them alone.
My Review: I had read that this was just a bad knockoff of Paranormal Activity. So I went into this expecting low budget crap, worse then Paranormal Activity. Yes, I saw that movie, and I can’t say that I really enjoyed it. Sure the nighttime footage was kinda spooky, but nothing ever happened. The daytime scenes were painfully boring, and the acting was pretty bad. So imagine my surprise when I turned on Paranormal Entity and there was good acting! And I can happily add that I really liked this, and in my opinion it is a much better film then Paranormal Activity….on all levels.
The best parts of ghost movies is the anticipation that something is going to happen. Usually nothing happens for awhile, but then when it does happen its gotta be big. Either that or there has to be a lot of little scares leading up to something bigger. This movie delivered on the scares. It was pretty cool how I’d expect something to happen, and nothing would happen, over and over again and then BAM! The ghostly activity started out small, and got larger and larger. However it does have its faults.
For instance there is one scene about 30ish minutes in, we hear a lot of screaming – someone has been attacked. But the next day we don’t get to hear what happened. That was sort of a let down. But on another level, what made Paranormal Activity kinda shitty was all the talk/filler during the day scenes. It just felt so false, so maybe it’s a good thing we didn’t get too much of that with this movie.
I also felt that while the cowbell part was creative, we just saw evidence that the spirit probably wouldn’t be walking that way and wouldn’t set those off. Not to mention the spirit was creative enough to close the door on a camera earlier in the film so it wasn’t “caught” on film, so why wouldn’t it just step over those?
The ending was rushed. It was like they had no clue how to finish the movie so instead of showing us anything they just acted as though the camera was off and then turned back on, and we see really just the aftermath. Thomas was so involved with the filming, so why would he shut the camera off, and then turn it back on? We can assume that Sam was raped, since its said in the beginning of the movie, but we don’t know why all this stuff is flung all over the house and why/how the doctor/investigator is dead… yet Thomas is somehow okay….
Gore/FX: All the ghostly activity is simple yet spooky, and at least stuff actually happens in this movie, unlike Paranormal Activity where all we get is some weird sounds.
Sexual Content: Quick flash of Sam’s boobs while in the tub.
Acting: I thought it was really really really good. Much better then other low budget films, and a hell of a lot better then the crappy acting (and dialogue) in Paranormal Activity.
Overall: I really liked this movie. I was spooked out for awhile. It was nice to have a few things happening during the day, not only in the night scenes. While I really enjoyed it, the ending wasn’t very good, and it could use some work. But overall I had a lot fun with it. I can’t imagine how spooked I would have been had I watched this at night in a house by myself haha.

View The Trailer (I don’t recommend watching it, as it shows most of the spooky scenes in it, and those shots will be ruined for you)
