Dead and Breakfast (2004)
Plot: Six friends get more than they bargained for when they spend the night at a bed-and-breakfast in the backwater town of Lovelock. When the B&B’s owner and the chef don’t survive the night, the travelers are the prime suspects. But the tables (and suspicions) turn when the townspeople become possessed by an evil spirit and besiege the young people in the B&B.
My Review: Another Netflix streaming film I avoided due to the bad rating. I actually avoided this for six months! Today I watched part of the trailer and realized SO many people were in this I just had to watch it.
I’m just glad that I knew going into it that it wasn’t a serious movie, that it was more of a dark comedy with zombies. In fact, there is even a singing zombie…and dancing zombies. But its pretty funny. Its one of those “WTF” (aka What The Fuck) moments, but its all in good fun.
To be honest I watched this in two sittings. I started it at like 1am when I couldn’t sleep. I kept pausing it off and on to do other things, and finally I shut it off at about 2:30am. I picked it up again the following day, and couldn’t remember some of the film. To me it isn’t much of a memorable movie, it isn’t a favorite, and it isn’t really GOOD. But its fun to watch and entertaining.
I’ve seen this movie compared to Evil Dead, and Brain Dead. I’m not a fan of Evil Dead (gasp!), so I can’t compare really. Maybe it is, and this one is just newer and the effects are a lot better so it was more entertaining to me, I’m not sure. I haven’t seen Brain Dead in over 15 years so I can’t compare that either.
As for the actual plot, it was a little silly. But it goes along with the comedy aspect of the film I suppose.
Gore/FX: Pretty gory. And if this was a real horror movie, the talking head part would have been pretty creepy. The gore definitely helps the movie along.
Sexual Content: None.
Acting: Gosh, where do I begin, there are so many people in this movie. First of all, the acting is fine, it isn’t bad whatsoever. Its over the top on purpose sometimes but its supposed to be, and it makes it that much funnier. As for the cast, we have Ever Carradine (to me she has one of those faces I know I‘ve seen her, but looking at her info on IMDB nothing rings a bell), Bianca Lawson (Vampire Diaries, Buffy, Dawson‘s Creek), Jeffrey Dean Morgan (Supernatural, Grey‘s Anatomy, Watchmen), Erik Palladino (ER), Gina Philips (Jeepers Creepers), Jeremy Sisto (Law & Order, Wrong Turn, Six Feet Under), David Carradine (Kill Bill, Kung Fu), Portia de Rossi (Nip/Tuck, Better off Ted, Arrested Development), and last but not least Devon Gummers all (My So-Called Life, Roswell).
Overall: I’m not really a fan of funny horror movies, and I’m not sure if I would have liked it if the cast had been full of nobodies. But since I knew everyone it was pretty entertaining to see them all in a gory flick. Its one of those movies I’d recommend for someone to watch at least once, with zero expectations. In a few years maybe I’ll give it another watch.
