I Spit on Your Grave (2010)

Plot: In this horror remake, young writer Jennifer finds life at her rented retreat perfect for working on her first novel. But her enthusiasm is shattered by her vicious rape. Now, the local thugs responsible will face an excruciating fate, as she brutally kills each and every one of them..

My Review: I saw the original movie only once, well over 8 years ago, and only half of it. The 2nd half of the disc was fucked up and I just never went back to it. I don’t remember much of it other then a woman in a cabin getting raped repeatedly by a couple of guys. I do seem to recall laughing a LOT at it. And no I don’t find that rape is a funny matter at all, nor do I condone it but being that the movie was made in the 70s, it just didn’t hold up in style and wording and whatnot so I found it kinda funny. But this isn’t a review for that movie. Maybe I’ll write that another day. . .

The movie starts off with a young and very beautiful woman driving around and stopping at a gas station where you see what you would assume (and would assume correctly) are going to be the male leads in the film, the rapists and torturers. She then continues on to her rented cabin. After some plumbing issues she gets someone out there to help unclog the toilet. A young mentally challenged boy. When he’s finished up she makes the mistake of happily giving him a little smooch on the cheek. He goes back to his buddies (the guys from the gas station) and tells them about her. They decide to pay her a visit where they then repeatedly rape her in many different ways, after the 5 of them are through with her, they leave her laying in the dirt. She gets up, walks away and jumps in a river. Never to be heard from again….that is until she shows up and starts killing off the guys who raped her.

As I stated above, rape isn’t a laughing matter, neither is any sort of torture or anything like this. But this is the movie world. The rape scenes weren’t all that graphic (at least not as graphic as the original films from what I recall), but its enough to make you squirm. On the other hand, the name calling and stuff was just stupid, and I felt it didn’t fit with the movie. The hillbillies kept calling her “horse” and having her neigh and stupid things like that. I felt it really took away from the fear in the scenes. But that was my ONLY issue with the movie.

Gore/FX: The makeup effects on the film weren’t the greatest, which is a shame because the movie was really decent. They used some CGI which looked kinda crappy, but the over all way that she goes about killing the guys is gruesome and “neat” if you can call it that. And the kill methods also match up to the way each man took part in her rape. For example, one man rapes her in her ass, and so for revenge she basically rapes him in the ass with an object.

Sexual Content: Obviously there is sex since this is a rape movie. I don’t remember there being much nudity to be honest. I can’t remember if we even get a full shot of nudity but I don’t recall. I think most of the time her hair is covering her breasts. At one point in the film we do see a penis, for a second.

Acting: Great. I thought that Sarah Butler did an excellent job in her role. I imagine it must be rough to film some of those scenes. I really liked her and look forward to seeing her in other films. I didn’t really KNOW the other actors. They were all familiar but I couldn’t place them at the time except for one. At the very end, during his special scene I realized that the guy who play’s Andy, is the actor who played Joey in A Nightmare on Elm Street 3 & 4.

Overall: I would definitely recommend seeing this movie. Even though it’s a touchy subject matter it was fun to see the rapists get what they had coming to them in the end. If the movie left out the “horse” names and stuff, and used real FX instead of CGI, I think I might have given it 5 stars.

I will say this movie is a rare case of the remake being light years better than original. I remember the original half just being one of the longest rape scenes in any movie I can certainly remember. With the last bit finally getting to the revenge part. The rape sequence in here is very uncomfortable to watch which thankfully is done right. The kills remind me of those seen in the German horror film series, Violent Shit. Good review.
