Blood Night: The Legend of Mary Hatchet (2009)

Plot: Local teens have long commemorated the death of “Mary Hatchet” — a girl who took an ax and killed her family in the 1970s — with the aptly named Blood Night. But things never got truly bloody until Mary’s ghost decided to make an appearance. Dead bodies are piling up, and Mary seems to be calling the shots. But there are secrets about her past that have yet to be uncovered.

My Review: I picked this movie up from RedBox, because I had seen/heard about it quite some time ago and I had it added to my Netflix list months ago. Finally Redbox got it so I grabbed it. I had heard that Danielle Harris was in it, and I just had to see it, being a huge fan of hers from back in the day of Halloween 4 & 5.

I didn’t expect this to be a movie that was wicked low budget or bad acting or anything like that due to Danielle Harris and Billy Moseley being in the film. But, it did end up being kinda crappy…

First of all the writing was terrible. Gus (Bill Moseley) is the caretaker at a local cemetery – the same cemetery that Mary “hatchet” is buried. He tells the tale of Mary’s ghost. Huge plot hole – if everyone died from the tales, how the hell did the story get out? But the bad writing doesn’t end there. There is a lot of filler. Like they just didn’t know what to add to the film. A lot of sex – boring sex. A lot of “seductive” dancing around before the sex. A lot of filler of the killer walking around stalking people. It just didn’t make a good movie. Had there not been all this filler and bad acting the movie probably wouldn’t have been all that bad.

The characters – there are way too many of them. I had no idea who was who for the entire film or who died. Nor did I care because there were like 15 “teens” at the party. Half of them were annoying, and we don’t get to know any of them to give a rats ass about.

Its obvious from the get go that the killer will be Mary Hatchets long lost child. And to me it was VERY obvious who the killer was, as the character kept going missing. They didn’t even attempt to hide it really…in the end, I can’t say I’m happy or disappointed at who the killer was, cause overall the movie just wasn’t something I enjoyed.

Gore/FX: Some of the gore is “ok” other parts are just lame and totally unbelievable, other scenes are just off screen, and some is just bad CGI…it could have been passable had the rest of the movie not been so cruddy.

Sexual Content: There is a lot of nudity in it. The ghost of Mary Hatchet loves to walk around nude. There is also rape and other sex scenes in the film. It felt like the movie didn’t know what else to have in it…

Acting: The acting was bad, but it would have been tolerable had the story/plot been solid. Instead it was filled with utterly useless characters delivering crappy one liners. Danielle Harris and Bill Moseley couldn’t even save this one…

Overall: I admit, I wanted to like it because Danielle was in it and the concept of it wasn’t all that bad. But the writing, acting, and cgi killed it for me. Big fans of Danielle Harris’ will want to check this one out even though she isn’t in too much of it and the movie is kinda boring. Give it a shot, its not the worst I’ve ever seen, but its not all that entertaining.
