The Lost Boys (1987)

Plot: After his brother, Michael (Jason Patric), drinks blood and gets mixed up with a rough biker gang rumored to be a coven of vampires, Sam (Corey Haim) and his two vampire-hunter friends — armed with garlic and water pistols full of holy water — try to rid the town of evil. Joel Schumacher directs this cult 1980s classic thriller, which co-stars Kiefer Sutherland, Jami Gertz, Dianne Wiest, Corey Feldman and Edward Herrmann.

My Review: What the hell can I say about The Lost Boys? If you haven’t seen this movie, your missing out on one of THE best vampire movies EVER made! If you have not seen this, you need to subscribe to Netflix (where they are currently streaming it in HD) or go out and buy it NOW. Its really that good! I grew up with this movie, and I have nothing but good things to say about it. Its one of those movies that really stays with you and if you love as a child your sure to love as an adult.

There are “two” opening scenes. The shot before the credits which starts with a bunch of “punk” looking guys on the boardwalk fighting with people and causing trouble. They get thrown off the boardwalk by a cop. Later the same cop gets attacked by something flying in the air.

As the opening credits start we see a normal family driving along, a mother and her two sons, Michael and Sam. Obviously they’ve been on the road awhile. Queue some awesome music “People Are Strange”, of course this version isn’t the Doors. But me as a child didn’t know that, and for many many years that was the only version of the song I knew.  The movie points out all the “strange” people they come across as they drive and walk through the city. We see a “welcome to” sign with spray painted “Murder Capital of the World” on it. We also see a bunch of “Missing” signs posted all over the place. This whole opening scene was probably supposed to “shock” the normal suburban people who hadn’t seen these sort of people. Nowadays its no big deal, heck in some cases its tame!

The family arrives to their new house where their grandfather plays a death prank on them. Obviously he’s a knarly guy. Grows weed and  he uses Windex as cologne at one point in the flick! He also likes to read TV Guide for the heck of it haha! He adds some good comedy to the movie…heck, if you go into this movie expecting 100% HORROR you’ll be disappointed. You need to know right off the bat that this movie has the perfect mix of comedy/horror but also takes itself seriously.

Later that night the kids go to the boardwalk and watch a concert with a sweaty half naked muscle man singing haha. There Michael spots Star. A hot chick dancing in the crowd. She’s our love interest in the movie. My sisters and I used to pretend we were her when we were kids. We’d wrap these sparkly scarves around our waists pretending they were her skirts she wore from the movie. Awe, such good times. Funny enough years later a friend of our family married a girl named Star.

Anyhow, Michael wonders off and Sam ventures into a Comic shop where he meets the Frog Brothers – a couple kids who happen to be Vampire hunters who love horror comics. Michael catches up with Star, who happens to ride off with the “punks” from earlier in the film. We later learn of course that they are vampires…come on it was OBVIOUS, I’m not giving away anything spoilerish here! *wink wink* Star later shows up and Michael goes and hangs with her…totally getting involved with the Vamps and becoming part vampire himself when he’s tricked into it.

Obviously I don’t want to keep going on and on about what happens in the film, cause then its giving everything away. But I just gotta say that I grew up with this movie and I love it. There isn’t one thing I’d say that I disliked about it and seeing it in HD is like seeing it in a totally different light!

A couple scenes I feel I have to mention without giving anything away for those who haven‘t seen it, but those who have know exactly what I‘m talking about – the flying out the window scene, and Sam’s on the phone with his mother freaking out and she starts freaking out, its hilarious! I crack up all the time! Also  the kick ass battle scene at the end, = awesome. Its like their version of the chase scene in the end of a slasher flick.

Gore/FX: This movie isn’t your typical Vampire/Horror movie. Its not gore filled. Its almost more family orientated. Or at least I feel that way about it…in fact there is only ONE scene I can think of that really shows anything that’s slightly gory where someone’s head is bitten, and another shot of a bug eating scene which always kinda turned my stomach. There is a flying scene towards the end that screams bad effects, but it isn’t on screen for very long.

Sexual Content: A hot scene with Michael and Star. No nudity and not really graphic or explicit. But hot. The deleted version is even better. I think to see it you’ll have to hunt around YouTube or track down the Special Edition DVD.

Acting: Perfect acting by all the cast! Since I first watched this movie as a kid I’ve the hots for Michael (Jason Patric) and Sam (Corey Haim). A couple years ago I was lucky to meet Corey, unfortunately I was way too shy and nervous and didn’t get my photo taken with him, only talked to him for a couple minutes and got his autograph. I figured I could do it the next year, and unfortunately he passed away later that year. He’ll be very missed by friends, family, and of course his fans. Kiefer Sutherland is another star that appears in this movie. He plays the role of David really well. In fact it was VERY weird watching him in the show 24, but then after I made it through that whole series and came back and watched this it was really weird seeing him in THIS. In the end Kiefer is awesome in this role! It wouldn’t be the same without him.

Overall: If you’re a fan of 80s flicks, vampire flicks, or the “two Corey’s” and you have not seen this movie you are missing out. It really is one of the best vampire films to come out of the 80s and everyone should give it a watch. I think I’ve only run across a couple people who don’t like it and the only reason they haven’t liked it is because its not dark dark horror. Like I said, I grew up on it and find NOTHING wrong with it, thus my 5 star rating.
