Dead Man Walking by Marty Shaw (Book Review)

Griffin knew watching an inmate being put to death wouldn't be fun, but he never expected Callahan to return as something less than human. Now Griffin, along with a handful of officers and inmates, are trapped within the walls of a prison as a legion of the walking dead stalk them for food. The choice is simple - fight back or die.

Seeing how this is a short story, there isn’t all that much to write about in response to how I liked the story other then saying I loved it... Continue reading

Mothman (2010)

In this made for TV movie (SyFy Original), a group of friends band together to hide the truth about an accidental death of one of their friends one night while out partying on a lake. 10 years later aspiring journalist Katherine is asked to return to her hometown and cover the annual Mothman Festival. There she is reunited with her old friends, and soon enough the Mothman appears and begins killing her friends one by one...

So in my reviews I don’t normally give spoilers, but wow, the beginning of this was fricking STUPID. This group of kids go swimming and bring along one of their little brothers... Continue reading

Paranormal Activity 3 (2011)

In a prequel to the events of the first two films, we find out that the demon terrorized Katie and Kristi not only as adults but as children too. Their "step-father" kept a video recording of all the events that took place in their "haunted" house, and it is presented here as a full length movie.

I haven’t been much of a fan of this series. For the most part there is not a lot of action/scare scenes but there is a lot of filler. And usually the action that these movies do have isn’t anything “big” or all that scary... Continue reading

Chain Letter 2 The Ancient Evil by Christopher Pike (Book Review)

After receiving a chain letter, a group of teens decides it must be a joke--after all, the perpetrator of the original chain letter is dead and buried. But when Fran refuses to perform her "deed", she is severely punished, and the group realizes that the power behind the letters is still alive.

I think I’d only read this book once as a teen and I didn’t like it overall. Going into it this time around I couldn’t remember much, but as I kept reading things came back to me... Continue reading

Texas Killing Fields (2011)

While trying to crack a murder in small-town Texas, local homicide detective Souder and his former New York City cop partner Heigh find themselves pulled into a case involving a serial killer who dumps his victims bodies in the "Texas Killing Fields". Based on a true story.

I went into it expecting a straight up serial killer sort of movie with the cops chasing the killer. Sort of like a “Seven” film. This movie is nothing like that. I also expected it to be decent if not good because of known actors being in it. Nope, it wasn’t... Continue reading

Incident On and Off a Mountain Road by Joe R. Lansdale (Book Review)

Chased through the woods at night by the maniacal Moon Face after a car accident, Ellen defends herself by rigging a series of booby traps she learned from her cruel survivalist husband. But her tricks may not be enough to stave off the creepy predator. This is a short story that was later adapted into an episode of Masters of Horror on Showtime in 2006.

I saw the Masters of Horror episode of this story back when it first came out. I watched a few more episodes and didn't like them. From my recollection, this one was the best one I had seen... Continue reading

Chain Letter by Christopher Pike (Book Review)

When Alison first read the chain letter signed "Your Caretaker," she thought it was some terrible sick joke. Someone, somewhere knew about that awful night when she and six other friends committed an unthinkable crime in the desolate California desert. And now that person was determined to make them pay for it. One by one, the chain letter was coming to each of them ... demanding dangerous, impossible deeds... threatening violence if the demands were not met. No one out of the seven wanted to believe that this nightmare was really happening to them. Until the accidents started happening — and the dying... Continue reading

Shark Night (2011) A.K.A. Shark Night 3D

A weekend of island beach-house debauchery turns into a hellish nightmare for a group of friends when one of them loses an arm in a vicious shark attack. Worse, the pals soon discover that the waters are infested with dozens of the toothy predators.

I went into this one not knowing anything about it. I recall at one point back when it was in the theater seeing trailers, but I didn’t remember anything about it. Before renting it tonight I asked Facebook friends if they’d seen it and what they thought about it. Most said it was pretty crappy... Continue reading

Grave’s End – A True Ghost Story by Elaine Mercado (Book Review)

When Elaine Mercado and her first husband bought their home in Brooklyn, New York, in 1982, they had no idea that they and their young daughters were embarking on a thirteen year nightmare. From weird sounds and smells to creepy laughter, balls of light and suffocating dreams, this book is the true story of how one family tried to cope with living in a haunted house.

When it comes to movies, I don’t tend to read reviews before I go into it, unless the movie looks like it could be something stupid. When it comes to books I try to seek out... Continue reading

Urban Gothic by Brian Keene (Book Review)

When their car broke down in a dangerous neighborhood of the inner city, Kerri and her friends thought they would find shelter in the old dark row house. They thought it was abandoned. They thought they would be safe there until morning. They were wrong on all counts. The residents of the row house live in the cellar and rarely come out in the light of day. They're far worse than anything on the streets outside. And they don't like intruders. Before the sun comes up, Kerri and her friends will fight for their very lives... though death is only part of their nightmare.

I’d been coming across Brian Keene novels for awhile on various websites... Continue reading
