Se7en (1995)

Plot: Two homicide detectives are on a desperate hunt for a serial killer whose crimes are based on the “seven deadly sins” in this dark and haunting film that takes viewers from the tortured remains of one victim to the next. The seasoned Det. Sommerset (Morgan Freeman) researches each sin in an effort to get inside the killer’s mind, while his novice partner, Mills (Brad Pitt), scoffs at his efforts to unravel the case.

My Review: Okay, while this may not be as much of a “horror movie” per say, I still think this movie deserves to be reviewed on this site.

So yeah, this movie may have a “cliche” plot, from looking at the plot summary. But the way everything unfolds is just brilliant, it’s smart, slick, disturbing and overall just a really interesting movie. I’m also pretty pissed this movie didn’t get an Academy Award for best cinematography, because I’d say it’s the 2nd best looking film of all time.

In the beginning we see Detective Mills and Somerset meet for the first time. You can see Mills is kind of immature about things when it comes to investigating. But, lets talk about the Opening Title Sequence. I love it. It’s a real gritty opening sequence, the font for the credits look like they’ve been hand written. It also sets up what our serial killer is like, and you can kind of tell he’s a bit OCD.

The first 2 kills of the movie have notes on them at the crime scene, Gluttony and Greed. Detective Somerset (Morgan Freeman) does some researching at the library, and finds out these 2 kills are from the Seven Deadly Sins. If you don’t know the sins here they are…

Gluttony, Wrath, Greed, Envy, Sloth, Pride and Lust.

Lust has to be my favorite sequence in the movie. You remember that shot in Goodfellas where Henry and Karen go on their first date and it was one long 5 minute shot? Well it’s like an intense version of that. I would tell you guys more about the movie, but I wouldn’t want to spoil the surprise.

Gore/FX: No on-screen violence here. But, that’s a good thing. We only see what Somerset and Mills see. It’s like we’re always one step behind the killer.

Sexual Content: No nudity. One kill involves sexual stuff, not good sexual stuff though.

Acting: Spectacular. Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt are like the perfect match for this movie. We also have R. Lee Ermey and Gwyneth Paltrow in our supporting cast.

Overall:   I’ll admit it, I didn’t like Se7en when I first watched it. I was absolutely horrified and disgusted. It is a very disturbing movie. But there was something intriguing about it that kept me coming back to watch it again, again and again. This is a very well-made and amazing movie.
