Review Policy

(Last updated 1-4-12)

Over the last month I was “attacked” by a few people on and by the same people here at SOH, due to one of my reviews (the nasty comments have since been deleted and comments on that review are sadly now closed). I was told that since I didn’t finish a book I wasn’t entitled to state my opinion on what I did read of the book, as a “professional” reviewer wouldn’t do that, and if I was going to be a “serious and professional” reviewer I better smarten up. Turned out they were “after me” because a movie was being made about the film and they didn’t want bad reviews out there…

Well, I just want to say that I am NOT a professional reviewer and I don‘t intend to ever be..

I love reading, it’s a hobby of mine, and has been a hobby of mine since I was 13 years old and picked up Hit & Run by R.L. Stine.

I find it entertaining to read and watch movies and sometimes I find a gem or something that’s crap and I feel the need to express my view on the material so back in 2001 I created Shivers of Horror as a way to keep track of my thoughts on movies. I gave up on it after awhile, and brought it back in late 2010.

I will NEVER claim to be a professional reviewer, I don’t have that “perfect” writing for it. But I honestly prefer to read reviews by other book & movie lovers that share my same tastes then some hardcore critic who tries to use big words and find the deep dark meaning to every book/movie they read/watch. I just tell it like I see it, and I always will…and I sure as heck don’t get paid for posting my opinions up here so they are all my honest opinions and always will be.

I do however try very hard not too be too harsh on the material I don’t like. Sometimes I can’t help it, as I said everything here is my honest opinion and I write it like I would be talking to a friend discussing it. My rating system isn’t a means of giving out bad grades. Its just a way for me to give a final overall opinion on the material.  Just because I give something a 3 out of 5 doesn’t mean I didn’t like it, it just means I didn’t LOVE it. Read the review in full to get all the nitty gritty details of WHY I gave it that many stars.

Overall, this is just a place for me to keep my thoughts and feelings on record, and I hope that by sharing them with other people I’ll get the word out there about some unknown material!
